First aid is a skill that’s useful at all ages. And children should learn basic first aid skills to help care for themselves and others. Now that were entering into the colder holiday months, it is important to stay safe when its slippy and cold.

Here’s a quick guide on how to teach basic first aid to kids.

Describe basic first aid techniques. It’s also a good idea to tell them the importance of knowing them. Make it fun and do this with worksheets or an interactive lesson. The important thing is to make sure it doesn’t seem frightening or daunting.

Use YouTube. Using a tool like YouTube to show videos that demonstrate how to do basic first aid activities such as CPR, applying pressure to stop bleeding, wound cleaning and bandaging is a great way of getting them to learn the skills. You can practice with them the skills that they’ve picked up to so that they have the confidence to do it should they need to.

Be well prepared. It’s always a good idea to have a well-stocked first aid kit made up if you have children around anyway so get that out and go through each item letting your child handle the item. Describe what each thing does and how it can help in carious situations.

Go through situations where they may need first aid. It’s a good idea to run through the times when your child may need to use their skills. Create a small quiz to help them realise how they need to respond in any given situation.

Discuss safety tips and accident prevention information. Make a list of activities and ways that kids could avoid needing or administering first aid. For example: wearing helmets when riding bike, no running with glass or scissors etc.

Make sure they know the next steps. There are of course situations that require more than just basic skills, where an adult will need to step in. Make sure your child understands what they need to do in more serious situations. They should be able to phone an ambulance and know what information they need to give the operator.

There are so many ways to teach your children about first aid. Making children aware of what to do in certain situations can help them gain confidence and even save lives. Do you have any more tips? Share them with us in the comments below…
