Product Care

You Are Here: Home / Product Care

Caring for your outdoor products is essential to ensure they provide you with the protection you need and the performance they are capable of. Caring for your outdoor clothing and outdoor equipment, gear and kit will also ensure that they last as long as possible, reducing wear and tear through being dirty, helping them to give you many years of enjoyable usage.

If you have any other questions about caring for an item of equipment please email sales@pogu.co.uk or call 01539 821864.

WALKING POLES

Walking poles need looking after, follow the care tips below to keep them in peak condition.

Always dry them out if they get wet, take them apart into their sections, wipe them dry then allow to air dry. If you don't do this, then they can corrode and each section can get stuck in the other.

Wash off any build up of mud

If you are using them on stony ground or pavements use a rubber tip on the end. This helps prevent the pole slipping and reduces wear on the tip.

Do not oil the poles at all, they work on a friction locking mechanism, so this will be ineffective if they are oiled.

HYDRATION PACKS

Hydration packs will quench your thirst on the move, but can become quite disgusting if not cleaned of looked after properly. This can cause bacteria growth in the bladder or tube giving an unpleasant taste and smell or even making the water undrinkable causing stomach upsets. There are many theories on the best way to keep them clean. We feel that the following is one of the best ways.

When you are back from your trip, wash all parts thoroughly with a solution of sterilising fluid. Rinse the tube through with the fluid several time, then rinse, ideally with hot water.

Leave the tubes and bladders out to dry thoroughly, ideally somewhere warm like an airing cupboard.

To care for the rucksack part of your hydration system follow the care advice above.

RUCKSACKS

As with all outdoors gear it is important to care for your rucksack, day sack or travel bag.  When you are back from a trip or expedition, dry your bag out, brush the dirt off and wipe it clean with a warm damp cloth. If you have torn it the manufacturer will recommend a repair centre. If you have lost or damaged a buckle or clip replace it as soon as you are back, so you know it is ready for next time you need it.

USER AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Pogu® Limited Lake District LA8 9LR UK www.pogu.co.uk

Certification body: SATRA Technology Centre, Kettering, Northants, UK (Notified Body 0321).

This product is classed as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by the European PPE Directive 89/686/EEC and has been shown to comply with this Directive through SATRA document M15:2008.

Pogu spikes have been designed to minimise the risk of injury when worn over footwear for use on ice and snow whilst taking part in recreational activities. However, always remember that no item of PPE can provide full protection and care must always be taken while carrying out the risk related activity. This product cannot prevent all slips and falls and is not intended for indoor use. Pogu spikes are not substitutes for mountaineering/climbing crampons.

PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS OF USE – This product has been tested in accordance with SATRA document M15:2008 for slip resistance on frosted and smooth ice and has met the following requirements: Forepart and heel at 7º CoF 0.30 – 1.25 when tested in accordance with SATRA TM 144:2011.

FITTING AND SIZING – When fitting fully secure the Velcro fastening system. When removing the product, always undo the Velcro fastening system. Only wear suitably sized overshoe spikes with structured footwear. Test overshoe spikes prior to use for proper fit. Ensure the spike plates are positioned securely against the sole of footwear for optimum performance. Always ensure that the product is fitted correctly before use.

COMPATIBILITY - To optimise protection, in some instances it may be necessary to use the overshoe spikes with additional PPE e.g. protective footwear. In this case, before carrying out the risk-related activity, consult your supplier to ensure that all your protective products are compatible and suitable for your application.

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT – When not in use, store the overshoe spikes in a dry area away from extremes of temperature. Never store the product underneath heavy items. After use, ensure overshoe spikes are cleaned in fresh water. Allow to dry naturally away from direct heat sources before placing them into storage. Use suitable packaging to store or transport the product as the steel spikes may damage other items.

REPAIR – If the overshoe spikes become damaged, they will NOT provide the optimum level of protection, and therefore should be repaired or replaced as soon as is practicable. Never knowingly wear damaged overshoe spikes. If in doubt about the level of damage contact the supplier before using the overshoe spikes.

CLEANING – Clean your overshoe spikes after use making sure any salt or corrosive elements are removed in fresh water. Although the crampon plates and chains are made from stainless steel, the spikes may be prone to slight rusting if not dried thoroughly. NEVER use caustic or corrosive cleaning agents. The chains and elastomer harness should be inspected regularly after use and NOT used if there is any sign of damage or invasive (more than surface rust) corrosion. For longer storage periods a thorough clean may be required.

WEAR LIFE – The exact useful life of the product will greatly depend on how and where it is worn and cared for. It is therefore very important that you carefully examine the product before use and replace as soon as it appears to be unfit for wear.
